Governor’s Conference for women by Debbie Norrell
Courier Lifestyles Editor
There are days when you just want to be with your sister friends. On Sept. 14, 5,004 women got together for the Third Annual Governor’s Conference for Women, co-hosted by Gov. Ed Rendell and Pennsylvania Commission for Women Executive Director Leslie Stiles. The day was a perfect opportunity for networking, connecting and a little shopping on the side. It was the type of event where you could hear first hand advice on purchasing your first home from Sharon Epperson, CNBC’s personal finance correspondent, or talk to Dr. Ian Smith (Celebrity Fit Club) about your weight problem. Out & About...Vince Carter's NBA All Star Party by Ashley G. Woodson
This week everyone came out to see their favorite sports celebrity. I went to De JaVu in the strip to visit Pittsburgh’s Premiere Party Starter “Moe.” He had a packed house on both levels with DJ Nate Da Phat Barber spinning on the 1’s and 2’s. My next stop was at the Shadow Lounge where DJ Supa C. gave us a show of pure hip-hop as he free-styled on the mic. Pittsburgh Steeler Ricardo Colclough also had a party at De JaVu in the Strip the next day and everyone came out for this one. My last stop was at Touch Night Club where New Jersey Nets NBA Star Vince Carter had his after party presented by none other than B. Marshall Productions. Photos by Ashley G. Woodson

On Sept. 8, the inaugural Jerome Bettis Caring for Kids All-Star Event was all about the kids. WPXI-TV sports reporter and anchor, Alby Oxenreiter served as master of ceremonies for the evening and the Nick Dialoiso Orchestra provided music for dancing. Spotted on the dance floor and even singing along to some of his own songs was Motown legend Smokey Robinson and his wife, Frances. Purple and gold goes white by Debbie Norrell
Courier Lifestyles Editor
The Labor Day weekend is traditionally Que weekend. This year the tradition continued with a few twists. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Iota Phi Chapter and Coors Light presented more than their traditional boat ride. On Sept. 1, hundreds partied with the Ques at the Phase III in Homewood until the wee hours of the morning. On Sept. 2 it was on to Highland Park for grillin’ and chillin’ at the Hawthorne Grove. Later that night the Ques tried on something new for size. They threw a “White Party” at CJ’s in the Strip District. According to fashion etiquette this was the last time of the year to sport your summer whites.

Out & About…Karaoke at CJ’s by Ashley G. Woodson
For New Pittsburgh Courier
Last week I visited the Pittsburgh Deli in Shadyside to help DJ Big Phill pay homage to the late Hip-Hop artist J. Dilla. He was well respected in the hip-hop community and everyone came out to celebrate his legacy. My next stop was the Shadow Lounge where there was a B-Day celebration and then I went to CJ’s for their Karaoke Night. Happy Birthday to my cousin, Jeanetta. Even though it was karaoke, the talent in the room was phenomenal. Saturday evening, I went to the Greater Pittsburgh Homewood Coliseum where Curt Lowry and his wife Dorothy, celebrated the 12th Annual Terrace Village Reunion. The place was packed wall to wall and nearly everyone from the Hill District came out for the celebration. Finally, I wanted to see if WAMO Night at Touch Nite was back to normal, and it was. DJ Boogie and Kode Wred from WAMO 106.7-FM rocked the house and the crowd had a great time. That’s the way it’s supposed to be—FUN AND SAFE. Photos by Ashley Woodon
