The Neighborhood Academy hosted internationally renowned Climatologist Warren M. Washington, PhD, chief scientist of the Climate and Global Dynamics Division of the National Center for Atmosphere Research.

Before an audience of 60 high school students, Washington spoke about his outstanding career in the atmospheric sciences, including his recent achievement as the first African-American to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation’s most prestigious scientific award.

There are many organizations located in Pittsburgh that are dedicated to the youth of our region. However, there is one program that is making a difference; that place is the Creative Arts Corner.

The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh’s Creative Arts Corner offers a free audio/visual training program that’s free for all HACP Residents.

STUDENT JOURNALISTS—Keith Butler-Brown and Billie Patterson interview Dan Hart.

CAC students are provided with a unique opportunity to cultivate their creative strengths in a state of the art studio environment, learning how to compose and contribute to broadcast quality productions using professional techniques and equipment. The students also take and develop high quality digital photographs using SLR cameras and software like Photoshop.

Working parents are already lining up child care plans for the summer. While they’re at it, educators say all parents of school-age children should also plan for preventing the dreaded summer slide.

“The ‘summer slide’ is the information and skills children forget during summer break from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next school year,” says Carrie Scheiner, who created Exploracise (www.exploracise.com), to provide parents and educators with award-winning products and programs that combine learning, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.
