Amachi reaches out to 500th mentee

With an alarming statistic of approximately two million children under the age of 18 having one or both parents incarcerated and 7,000 of those children being located in Allegheny County, according to the Amachi Pittsburgh website, it is not hard to see why the organization continues their mission to mentor children ages 4 to 18, who are victims of having an incarcerated parent.
In January 2010, the non-profit faith based program announced the milestone of their 500th mentor-mentee match with a child from Penn Hills and a man from New Kensington.

Oliver senior wins ROTC scholarship

When Asia Johns was in 8th grade, she was told about all the Pittsburgh Public Schools’ magnate programs, she chose the JROTC program at Oliver High School because it sounded interesting.
Now, as she prepares to graduate this June, she is the program’s Cadet Lt. Colonel—the highest rank attainable. She is also the school’s valedictorian, and for those achievements and her community service work she has been awarded a full four-year college scholarship worth $75,000.

Learn your options at free National College Fair

The Pittsburgh National College Fair will be held on Feb. 4, 9 a.m.–1 p.m and 6 p.m.–9 p.m and Feb. 5, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. Sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling and hosted by the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling, this event is free and open to the public.

New sponsors for Black history essay contest

Bynums Creative Institute (a division of Bynums Marketing & Communications, Inc.), is inviting students ages 6 through 18 to participate in the 18th annual African American History Essay Contest.
The competition is held each year in celebration of Black History Month, and it is designed to help students of all races learn about African-Americans who have made positive contributions to society. Key sponsors for the contest are GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, UPMC Health Plan, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers.

PNGML headed to D.C.

The Billy Eckstine Youth Vocal All-Star Ensemble and The Billy Strayhorn Youth Jazz All-Star Ensemble, a program component of Pittsburgh’s Next Generation of Music Legends are headed to Washington, D.C., April 23-25 for the sixth annual Big Band Jazz Festival.
Some of the activities include master class jazz workshops by renowned music educators at the Sylvan Amphitheater and live concert performances by the students at the theater and the National Mall.
