John Witherspoon

The Improv presents John Witherspoon at 8 p.m. at 166 E. Bridge St., Waterfront. For four-nights the hilarious Witherspoon will bring the laughter to the Burgh. He has appeared in numerous movies and television and is better known for his roles as Ice Cube’s dad in the Friday trilogy and Pops on the “Wayans Brothers” sitcom. "It's watered-down jazz now. Too many students go to school for music and you have to learn too much technology," said Donaldson, 84, who resides in Florida. "Television doesn't give us a boost and because people don't see Jazz on television, we can't compete with the other music that's out there."

Despite the roadblocks for Jazz performers nowadays, Donaldson has continued to make a good living in the genre over the past six decades.

Childhood memories of traveling via car from Detroit to visit his aunt in Mount Washington and the Pittsburgh Incline are conjured up when the iconic comic thinks of the Golden Triangle.

“Traveling to Pittsburgh was the first time I had saw a hilly city. I went Downtown and the city was unbelievable,” Witherspoon recalls. “I am not a stranger to Pittsburgh.”

My first stop was at Petra International Ministries Church in East Hills where House of Manna Media presented an event called Day of Discipleship featuring Unashamed Tour 2010 “The Movement.” This event was unique and original with hip-hop and gospel coming together for a great concert and worship.
