Blue Magic sizzles at New Horizon Theater

New Horizon Theater, Inc. chairperson Joyce Meggerson-Moore felt this year’s annual event featuring ’70s soul crooners Blue Magic was a definite success.

The event was held May 1 at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty.

“They were nice guys and the put on a good show. The show was a success and people said they loved it better than all the other ones we’ve had,” Meggerson-Moore said.

‘First Voice’ features variety of premieres at AWC

It’s been said that you reap what you sow. Just under a year ago, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture announced its inaugural Fellows Program class. Later this month, Pittsburgh will enjoy the first fruits borne during “First Voice: A Pittsburgh International Black Arts Festival” in the heart of the Cultural District.

The heart of “One Voice” are the fellowships that communicate through a variety of mediums, and are augmented by the internationally-acclaimed Rennie Harris Puremovement dance troupe and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra.

I didn’t want my son to join the armed services!

(NNPA)—Dear Gwendolyn:

I have two sons. Their age difference is 15 years. This is my problem. Ten years ago my older son left home and joined the armed forces. Before leaving, he married a woman who was no good for him. I told him so but he totally ignored my advice.

He was injured and returned home wheelchair bound. His wife was running around with his friends and other men even while he was in the Army. So when he was released as a cripple, his wife treated him like a dog. All she wanted was his allotment check. Now my younger son has joined the Navy. Like his older brother, he too is getting married.  Last week he became upset with me because I told him to wait until he returns, then marry.

Gwendolyn, why is it that men don’t listen to their mothers?—Mrs. Morely

Out & About with Brotha Ash

This week I visited the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre in Downtown Pittsburgh, Peabody High School in East Liberty, Kenny’s Place in the Hill District, The New Amsterdam in Lawrenceville, Ava Lounge in East Liberty and the Red Onion in the Hill District.

My first stop was at the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre in Downtown Pittsburgh where August Wilson’s play “Jitney” was presented featuring Sala Udin and an all-star cast. If you missed this play, you have to check it out. It is playing until May 30.

Cover To Cover...‘Satch, Dizzy & Rapid Robert’

Much to your spouse’s chagrin, you can’t remember your anniversary.

When asked, you can rattle off your phone number if you think about it first. Your birthdate is an easy one, but your kids’? Not so much.

Now, your favorite baseball player’s batting average, you know that. And your team’s league standing? Piece of cake.
