A group of Hill District churches have banded together to raise $25,000 for the August Wilson Cultural Arts Center. Joined by the center’s interim CEO Marva Harris, pastors from the 5-N-1 Churches, as they call themselves, announced the financial commitment during an April 5 press conference at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

FINANCE—As Rev. Glenn Grayson of Wesley Center AMEZ and Rev. J. Van Alfred Winsett of Ebenezer Baptist look on, August Wilson Center Interim CEO Marva Harris explains how their $25,000 pledge, made with three other churches will help offset construction cost overruns at the center.

“We’re hopeful this will spur other churches and religious organizations to come forward with similar initiatives,” said Ebenezer’s Rev. J. Van Alfred Winsett. “We’re hoping this will unlock the doors.”

Barely there

Who doesn’t have voice mail in 2010? Recently I tried to call a business and got a busy signal. I was trying to remember the last time I heard a busy signal when calling a business. Where is the voice mail?

I had a friend once that when I would call her I sometimes would get a busy signal. I reminded her there is this wonderful feature called “call waiting” she said, “Oh I have that, you call and if I’m on the phone you wait.”

My wife needs to understand people better!

(NNPA)—Dear Gwendolyn:

I have been married to a wonderful woman for the past 26 years. At least she used to be wonderful. This is the problem. Two years ago I joined a bowling club with some of my co-workers. After we formed a men’s league, the wives decided they would form a league. My wife stopped going to the bowling matches three months ago. She claims to have a dislike for the women in the league.

Saying ‘I do’: Black marriage campaign is growing

by Megan K. Scott
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—For Kenny and Lynette Seymour, last weekend’s Black marriage gala was about celebrating their seven-year marriage. They got to meet other Black couples while spending a romantic evening together.

“Every time you meet another couple, you learn something new about yourself and relationships in general,” said Kenny Seymour, a 39-year-old Broadway music director who lives in Queens. “It was beautiful to be around a bunch of married people in love.”
