Remember that old saying “is there a doctor is the house?” On June 26 at St. James AME Church the house wasn’t full of doctors, it was full of nurses. The Association of Pittsburgh Black Nurses held their second annual Evelyn Paige Parker Scholarship Luncheon.

Parker was a trailblazer, in the ‘40s. She was refused an education in nursing in Pittsburgh but that didn’t stop her from becoming a nurse. Evelyn Paige enrolled in the all-Black Mercy-Douglass Hospital School for Nurses in Philadelphia. Parker came back to her home of Pittsburgh and served a long and full life of service, teaching and mentorship. When she passed last year the luncheon was renamed in her honor.

Reverend Maxine E. Jenkins, temporary supply pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Duquesne, has been decreed the Pittsburgh Presbytery’s second certified Christian educator and is its first African-American to be so named.

Reverend Jenkins, 60, of Penn Hills, began the long process for certification in March 2006. The Presbyterian Educators Certification Council certified her this year.

He is described as “a gift from the heart of God to the people of God” and Rev. Dr. Darryl T. Canady, walking in faith as Pittsburgh’s newest religious leader, is taking his job very seriously.

The senior pastor of Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church is quite comfortable in his new surroundings, making inroads to move the East Liberty church in a positive and inclusive direction. Vowing to “make an impact through contact” within “The Community of Hope,” the dynamic minister is touching the hearts and souls of the people who enter or pass by the red doors at the corner of Rodman and Collins streets.

I got married 12 years ago and have regretted it from day one. This is the problem: I married a woman with three children, two boys and one girl. I was in a car accident last year and was awarded $32,000 recently. My wife is on sick leave, but receives a disability check while recuperating. After paying off all her bills, buying new appliances for the house, buying a new computer, my wife still wants more. I told her that I have to keep some money for hard times and cannot just waste it on unnecessary items.
