Jenkins family celebrates 80th anniversary

On July 17, I spent a wonderful day with an incredible family of relatives that can trace their roots back six generations.

The day began when I met with a member of the Jenkins family, a great guy named James Scott, in East Liberty at 9 a.m., to go to South Park Township where the Jenkins Family 80th Reunion would take place. We were one of the earliest members to arrive at the main cottage lodge and be greeted by “Auntie” Barbara Jean Minor, who also was a very pleasant lady to know and spend the day with.

As we waited for the others to arrive, some of the early arrivals played toss with footballs and softballs in the parking area, a warm-up for the annual softball game to be played later. Meanwhile several of the other cousins and aunts started to prepare the food for the day in the lodge’s kitchen. The Jenkins family’s family tree extends as far south as Mississippi, Florida and Virginia, and north, ranging from Ohio to New York, with Pittsburgh right in the middle.

Almost free

Sometimes the story that is too good to be true is true. Have you heard about Megabus.com?

Maybe you’ve seen it ride by with the big sign that says $1. Yes, you can actually go somewhere fun for $1.

The bus goes to New York, Philadelphia, Harrisburg and State College. All seats are not $1. Your price is determined by the time you make your reservation. I was fortunate to get a seat for $10 each way to the Big Apple.

I won’t have to worry about driving, gas, tolls or parking. The stop in New York is right at Penn Station. The bus is a double- decker and it looks comfortable. You can only bring one standard size suitcase (it cannot weigh more than 50 pounds) to stow under the bus and one small carryon (I would think like a large purse).

Let them eat cake

Birthday’s are for celebrating and on June 4 at the August Wilson Center all the beautiful people came out to celebrate the birthday of Demeatria Gibson Boccella.

The creator of Fashion Africana knows how to throw a fashion show and a party. Guests mixed and mingled above Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District and listened to the music of some of Pittsburgh’s premier musicians.

Alton Merrill, Sean Jones and Roger Humphries were on board with perfect party music. After a slight roasting of the lovely and beautiful “Mechy” (Demeatria), the guest of honor paid tribute to some of the special people in her life with lush bouquets of flowers.

HAPPY 110TH BIRTHDAY

FLOSSIE-CARTERFLOSSIE-WITH-FAMILY
HAPPY 110TH BIRTHDAY—Flossie Carter, a resident of UPMC’s Heritage Place, pictured left, turned 110, becoming the third woman to turn 110 in western Pennsylvania since 2009. Flossie did not celebrate this milestone by herself. She was joined by longtime friends, admirers and a special visit by the Pirate Parrot. Born in Birmingham, Ala., Carter worked for the Works Project Administration, the government program that helped to provide jobs after the Great Depression. She moved to Pittsburgh as an adult to help raise her grandchildren while her children went to work. A devoted lifelong baseball fan, she continues to root for her favorite home team, the Pirates. Right: Flossie Carter is joined by longtime friend of the family Cheryl Terry, great-great-grandson Mailiq Carter, and granddaughter Dianne Carter.
