12th annual Spring Hat Luncheon
Category: Lifestyle Written by Debbie Norrell - Courier Lifestyles Editor
May 1 was a beautiful sunny day and there was a notable “Song” in the air, not a lyrical song but the many designs of hat designer Luke Song were spotted among the flowers and trees. Many of the hats worn in Highland Park at the 12th Annual Spring Hat Luncheon presented by PNC and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy had that Song touch and had been purchased when Song was in town in April for the Patron Party hosted by Ritchie Scaife (hat luncheon honorary chair).

Song is based near Detroit and designed the gray chapeau that Aretha Franklin wore to President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Song donated a portion of all Pittsburgh hat sales made between the party and the luncheon to the conservancy. More than 600 arrived at the tents just off Highland Avenue to mix and mingle and get a good look at all the other ladies’ hats and to parade their hats in front of the Pittsburgh paparazzi.

Cuisine...Simply delicious

Most parents face the same mealtime dilemma — making affordable and convenient food that the whole family will like. Time is short, palates are picky and some fear it will cost too much to put real food on the table.
Celebrity chef Bobby Flay joined the Hellmann’s® and Best Foods® Real Food Project to help moms tackle the barriers to real food in simple and helpful ways. “Real food does not have to be complicated. With a few basic ingredients, it’s easy to create a meal you can feel good about serving the whole family,” said Flay.

This mall is made for shopping
Category: Lifestyle Written by Debbie Norrell - Courier Lifestyles Editor
Weren’t you disappointed when you heard about the fight in Monroeville Mall? That is the mall I grew up in and I still consider it my mall of choice. I spent many a day there after school and on weekends, working not shopping.
Not long ago the mall went through some renovations, escalators have replaced stairs at the end near the former Boscov’s, seating areas have been added and the mall feels alive. A new area has been added to the front of the mall called the district that includes The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto, Carino’s Italian Restaurant, Ulta and Barnes and Noble. I just can’t imagine someone going to the mall with the intentions of “getting someone straight.”

TRY an evening in Paris
Category: Lifestyle Written by Debbie Norrell - Courier Lifestyles Editor
It was only a matter of time before Three Rivers Youth (TRY) President and CEO Peggy Harris brought Paris to Pittsburgh. Harris spent a year studying at the Sorbonne in her junior year of college, she took her daughter there as a college graduation present and has frequently paid visits to the city of lights.

On April 29 at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens several hundred passengers arrived in the early evening to collect their boarding passes and board “TRY Air” to Paris to celebrate 130 years of TRY giving light to the future of our youth. The flight crew looked surprisingly familiar, much like Vince Sims, reporter and anchor for WPXI, George Miles, president and CEO of WQED Multimedia and Danielle Nottingham, weekend morning anchor for Channel 11 News.
