Schenley wins despite heavy hearts

by Malik Vincent

Schenley took the field last Thursday night for the first time after learning of the death of their former defensive back/running back, Jeron Grayson.

He was shot and killed in an apartment on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania, during homecoming weekend, in the early morning of Oct. 17.

Grayson was visiting home from Hampton University, where he was a freshman, to attend the festivities.

Just hours before the game, he was laid to rest at Wesley Center AMEZ Church, where his father, Rev. Glenn Grayson, is the pastor. Despite the heavy circumstances, Schenley defeated Westinghouse, 22-6.

Inside Conditions...Slippery when wet

AubreyBruceBox

The slippery when wet or just when being tackled signs should have been plastered all over the football yesterday, before, during and after the Steelers-Dolphins contest. Everyone is hyped, as they should be, about the return to action of Big Ben Roethlisberger, but after three fumbles or should I say three totally unnecessary give-aways, we had all better buy a bit more stock in the company that manufactures and sales Tums.

by Rachel Cohen

NEW YORK (AP)—Their games often end way past bedtime for most of the nation. The biggest names linked to them—Nolan Ryan, George W. Bush, Willie Mays and Barry Bonds—won’t be on the field.

And yet the World Series matchup of Texas and San Francisco could be intriguing, despite what all the TV ratings people say. If only fans around the country knew these two teams better.

Undefeated Greensburg Central Catholic beats East Allegheny by a whisker

by Smokin’ Jim Frazier
For New Pittsburgh Courier

In boxing they say to beat the champ you have to knock him out. East Allegheny (5-3) had Greensburg Central Catholic (8-0), the defending WPIAL champions, on the ropes but failed to deliver the fatal dagger.

The Wildcats weren’t very hospitable as senior night hosts to the visiting Centurions in the first half of their Interstate Conference showdown Friday night.

Elijah ‘Lucky’ Miller passes at 104

Elijah Daniel “Lucky” Miller was such a fixture at Homestead’s Second Baptist Church, it is doubtful anyone will surpass his 65-year attendance record. He was remembered there in a home going ceremony Oct. 18. Miller passed away Oct. 12 at West Penn Hospital’s Forbes Hospice. He was 104.

In 1926 he moved from his native Virginia to work at U.S. Steel’s Homestead Works. Until his death, he was still collecting a pension.
