Pittsburgh, along with the Raleigh-Durham area, will welcome new American Basketball Association franchises beginning in the 2011 season with the addition of the Carolina Jaguars and Pennsylvania Pride.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be bringing this to Pittsburgh,” said Aubrey Bruce, president of the McKeesport-based SeaStorm Sports & Entertainment Group and a New Pittsburgh Courier sports columnist. “There are many things in the works and we are working tirelessly with the league to conform with its guidelines.”

A lesson in teamwork the Rangers can’t forget

by Jim Litke
AP Sportswriter

Getting the Texas Rangers to play the game the way he did was never going to be an easy sell. Tougher still was how Ron Washington got them to play for each other.

Back when he was still cashing checks as a player, Washington was a skinny middle infielder, with no pop in his bat, who learned to make the most of every opportunity. He was good with the glove, smart on the basepaths and stubborn enough to make every swing count, especially late in games.

Schenley wins despite heavy hearts

by Malik Vincent

Schenley took the field last Thursday night for the first time after learning of the death of their former defensive back/running back, Jeron Grayson.

He was shot and killed in an apartment on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania, during homecoming weekend, in the early morning of Oct. 17.

Grayson was visiting home from Hampton University, where he was a freshman, to attend the festivities.

Just hours before the game, he was laid to rest at Wesley Center AMEZ Church, where his father, Rev. Glenn Grayson, is the pastor. Despite the heavy circumstances, Schenley defeated Westinghouse, 22-6.

Steelers squeeze past Dolphins; defending Super Bowl champs next

The Steelers pulled off a miracle 23-22 win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday to stay in a three-way tie for the best record in the NFL—5-1—and now must get ready for the struggling Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints who are coming off an upset 30-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Both teams shut down the run and were able to control the air attack. Rashard Mendenhall was held to just 37 yards on 15 carries while the two-headed running attack of the Dolphins did not do much better. Ricky Williams had 48 yards on 11 carries and Ronnie Brown had only 14 yards on 9 carries.

Inside Conditions...Slippery when wet

AubreyBruceBox

The slippery when wet or just when being tackled signs should have been plastered all over the football yesterday, before, during and after the Steelers-Dolphins contest. Everyone is hyped, as they should be, about the return to action of Big Ben Roethlisberger, but after three fumbles or should I say three totally unnecessary give-aways, we had all better buy a bit more stock in the company that manufactures and sales Tums.
