Rock of Redemption

The year was 1911. The industrial revolution was going strong in the industrial capital of the world. South of the Mason-Dixon line, Jim Crow laws were etched in stone. Pittsburgh was situated just above the North-South boundary. There were no official “James Crow” laws in place but the unacceptable law of racial exclusion was imprinted on the hearts of some from all points, north, south, east and west in America.

In regards to the University of Pittsburgh, Hubbard Hollensworth and Harry Ray Wooten were the first student athletes enrolled at Pitt in 1911. However it would take until 1945, 34 years for any genuine notice to be given to them or any other African American athlete to attend the University.

Steelers take Ironhead’s son in first round

Craig “Ironhead” Heyward rushed for 1,791 yards in 1987 at Pitt and was fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft.

In a move to bolster an aging defensive line, the Steelers selected Ironhead’s son, Cameron Heyward, a 6-5, 300 pound defensive end from Ohio State with the 31st pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. None of the current starters are younger than 30 years old.

“Don’t ever quit!” is the first piece of advice he was given by his daddy the minute that he set foot on a football field. Work hard, be patient and stick with it, and good things will happen. That kind of raw determination and work ethic enabled Heyward to be one of the best football players in the world.

OVERTIME

:10 Wait! I thought “you guys” said Cam Newton was not ready. You said he was going late first round. Yea, right. I told ya No. 1 pick, two months ago.

:09 Speaking of playing quarterback on the pro level, you know it’s not rocket science…after all “Bubby Brister” did it.

:08 Ohio State, Jim Tressel and all the players involved. Let it go NCAA... The players sold their own stuff, not stolen items, but their own stuff!
