Obama throws high and wide in historic first pitch

by Frederic J. Frommer
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP)—A hundred years after President William Howard Taft started a baseball tradition with a low ceremonial first pitch, President Barack Obama went in the other direction Monday, sailing a high, wide toss at the Washington Nationals’ home opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Just as Taft’s toss forced pitcher Walter Johnson to make an athletic play, Obama’s required Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman to lunge to prevent a wild pitch.

Opening act

The 2010 baseball season has begun in Pittsburgh but if the Pirates aren’t careful, their heads may be the trophy hanging on the walls of a few MLB franchises.

The season had some pomp and ceremony happening prior to the Los Angeles Dodgers taking the field. Pregame festivities profiled the first home game of the season by honoring Pirate outfielder Andrew McCutchen as the 2009 Baseball America Rookie of the Year. Pirates general manager Neal Huntington and Pirates manager John Russell presented McCutchen with a framed print to commemorate the event.

Swain leads Courier All-City boys’ basketball team

In the beginning it was all Perry Commodores in boys’ basketball as they jumped off to a 7-0 start. It appeared that they didn’t miss City League Player of the Year Vaughn Morgan at all. But then came the snow and a long delay. Once play began again Perry lost their first game and struggled to a 6-3 finish that dropped them behind the surprising Oliver Bears who finished a game ahead of them with a 14-2 record. Lost in this battle were the Allderdice Dragons who had an outstanding team but started off very slowly finishing the season at 11-5, barely beating out the surprise team of the season, the 10-6 Westinghouse Bulldogs.
