Every gift is a sacrifice

Before you think that I’m some type of tightwad or scrooge, let me say that I believe that giving is a wonderful thing. In fact, it is my heart’s desire that we all build a solid financial foundation so that one day we can give our time, talent and treasure to people and charitable causes that we believe in. However, I believe in giving when it helps not when it hurts.

Warning to those of you who are working hard, sacrificing, and doing without in order to save money for emergencies and futures goals: You’ll inevitably have to deal with money vampires—friends and family members that always seem to be having a money crisis and seeking to suck the money out of your wallet. It’s unavoidable. As a result, you’re going to quickly have to learn when you’re in a position to give and if the gift is truly helping or enabling.

If you believed the statistics, young Black youth are supposed to be in jail or dead. The statistical reports that being Black in America most likely meant we were not supposed to be able to escape the hood.

Detroit retirement systems participate in successful recapitalization of Rivers Casino

DETROIT—The General Retirement System of the City of Detroit and the Police and Fire Retirement System of the city of Detroit (Detroit Retirement Systems), announced that they, along with other existing investors including the gaming affiliates of Rivers Casino Chairman Neil Bluhm and Walton Street Capital, have participated in a successful recapitalization of the Rivers Casino located in Pittsburgh.

Business Opportunity Fair considered best one yet

For 33 years, the Western Pennsylvania Minority Supplier Development Council, formerly the Pittsburgh Regional Purchasing Council has sponsored the Business Opportunity Fair. This year the 34th annual confab was predicted to be one of the best Opportunity Fair events hosted by the WPMSDC.

LET THE SHOW BEGIN—Affiliates of the Western Pennsylvania Minority Supplier Development Council cut the ribbon to start the Business Opportunity Fair at the entrance of the Monroeville Convention Center.

Emphasizing the focal point of the organization and conference, Gary L. Evans, chairman of the WPMSDC board, pointed out that the purpose of the day was for participants to make new contacts and connections.

“Today is about building business relationships between minority-owned businesses, major corporations and public agencies,” he explained.
