Bank overdraft fees

MichaelShinnBox

This spring, while away at college, my son racked up $278 in bank overdraft fees on his debit card account. The actual charges were relatively small, $10 here, $20 there and before he knew it, he had a financial train wreck on his hands. The bank charged $39 for each overdraft that it paid and an additional $39 for each day the account was overdrawn. We suspended the account and because we had a relationship with the bank, the total fees were reduced. We then wired his monthly spending money to him through Walmart.

Social Security questions and answers

by LeeAnn Stuever

Question: When will I get my automatic Social Security Statement?

Answer: If you are at least 25 years old and not yet receiving benefits, you should receive your annual Social Security statement about three months before your birthday. If your automatic statement has not arrived and you are within one month before the month of your birth or if you need a statement sooner, you can request one at any time by going to www.socialsecurity.gov/statement. You can learn more about the Social Security Statement and how to use it at www.socialsecurity.gov/mystatement.

Creating inner-city young, homegrown entrepreneurs

FarrahGrayBox

(NNPA)—As you probably know, there are two different worlds of businesses operating in America’s inner cities—legal and illegal. In many neighborhoods where legal businesses are failing, young people are exposed to a drug-glorifying culture that is thriving. The career path is more common to become a drug dealer and make lots of money than to go to college graduate and get a job or start a legal business.

We cannot manufacture entrepreneurs but we can create the environment and conditions that allow, encourage and facilitate entrepreneurship.

Women’s Small Business Association provides opportunities

As a member of the Women’s Small Business Association, associates receive some type of business announcement, meeting notice or request for service every day. It is one of the many ways the group strives to enable women to help other women in business.

Founded in 2007, the mission of the WSBA is to serve as a valuable resource for business women, by helping and stimulating small and start up businesses. Founder Susan Miller says its goal is to foster a woman’s economic independence by helping develop skills needed for entrepreneurial success through networking and education. Miller said the belief of the group is that self-employment is a viable and a needed option for all women.
