Editorial...Congress should pass health care reform bill now!

President Obama is right to urge Democrats to move quickly to pass comprehensive health care reform legislation. There has been months of debate on this issue. All sides have been heard.

Attempts at a bipartisan compromise have failed.

The recent health care reform summit hosted by the president between top Democratic and Republican leadership in the House and Senate shows that the two major parties have fundamental differences on health care reform that will not be overcome with more time.

Too much focus on yesteryear?

An overwhelming number of us are students of events and accomplishments of those men and women who were Black History-makers.

HopKendrickBox

There are those of us who recite during Black History Month the names of persons starting with the builders of the pyramids, inventors, WEB Dubois, Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes, Marcus Garvey, Nat Turner, A. Phillip Randolph, Harriett Tubman, So Journer Truth, etc., etc.

Saving the soul of the religious left

JosephPhillipsBox

A reader recently sent me an e-mail admonishing me for not being more supportive of President Obama. For reasons that were not immediately clear, he also raised the issue of my confessed Christianity. The “aha” moment came when he asked, “Do you pray for your leader like you’re instructed in the good book?”

I responded that while I have prayed for the president, I do not do so regularly. That, in his mind, was evidence of my Christian hypocrisy.

Our community needs a complete count

Yes, there is some controversy around question nine on the 2010 Census form. But whether you consider yourself to be Black, African American, Negro or something else, you should think of the U.S. Census as a way to economically empower your community.

That’s right. There are two economic empowerment aspects to the Census.

First, there are employment opportunities.

If you are out of work or are looking to supplement your income, visit the U.S. Census office on the eighth floor of the William S. Moorhead Federal Building and apply for a job. I did this during the 1990 Census and worked in the Hill District, my own community, as a Census taker.

Woods didn’t owe public an apology

Tiger Woods’ public apology about his infidelity was both unsettlingly and unnecessary.

The apology marks the fall of the No. 1 golfer in the world and reflects the rise in American society’s insatiable intrusion into the private lives of public figures.

The event, which was televised live, was amazingly treated as if were a major announcement by a head of state.

Woods, who was making his first public statement since a Nov. 27 car crash set off a wave of revelations about his extramarital affairs, talked for about 13 minutes from behind a podium backed by a blue curtain.
