Adoration highlights youth concert

ADORATION—The Adoration Youth and Young Adult choir, under the direction and leadership of Minister Crystal R. Manker of Northside Institutional COGIC operating from their temporary home at 2235 Federal Street on the North Side, presented their eighth annual concert entitled “Cry Out” at Trinity AMEZ Church last month. Bishop E.M. Thorpe is the founder and evangelist. Dr. Lola M. Thorpe is pastor of Northside Institutional and Rev. Joseph Daniel Lewis is the pastor of Trinity. At left: the group Adoration performs.

Census kicks off national schools campaign

CHICAGO (NNPA)—The U.S. Census Bureau has kicked off a national schools campaign at King College Preparatory High School to get more students involved in the upcoming census. The goal is to have the Census in Schools program reach 56 million school-age students in 118,000 schools nationally.

Stanley Moore, regional director for the U.S. Census Bureau, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle, and other community and civic leaders, joined Mayor Richard M. Daley as he expressed the importance of student    involvement.

Mt. Ararat launches mentoring program

More than 150 mentors and mentees were matched up for a two-year mentoring experience at Dave and Buster’s in the Waterfront in Homestead, as Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Community Activity Center launched its mentoring program for 2009-2010.

The MACAC mentoring program provides the spiritual, psychological an emotional safety net for African- American youths, as well as rigorous academic tutoring support, career development activities and character development.

Soul Food Social: Jazz Classic dinner at Point Park

To ignite efforts in making Point Park University more culturally aware and socially diverse, the Black Student Union hosted its annual Soul Food Social: Jazz Classic Dec. 2 in the Point Park University Ballroom.

The event provided music, food, and a program that helped the Black Student Union advertise its plans to the larger community. It also highlighted the sounds of jazz. The keynote speaker for the evening was UPMC Chief Diversity Officer Candi Castleberry-Singleton, who talked about the advantages and benefits of diversity and inclusion in today’s society.

Hill District education council suggests school changes

At a community conference on education in the Hill District, those in attendance had a chance to vote on three models for the future of their elementary schools. The models, developed by the Hill District Education Council, recommended the conversion of the schools to partial magnets or adding optional programs focusing on technology and science as well as a foreign language.

“We believe we can develop an excellent education in the Hill,” said council co-chair Rev. Johnnie Monroe. “We want to put to rest the myth that Black kids can’t learn.”
