Oliver holds annual Career Day

by Paige K. Mitchell
For New Pittsburgh Courier

What does a promise mean to you? Most people see a promise, as a way of making an agreement, and giving your word as comfort to let someone know everything is going to be alright. Well, at Oliver High School, a P.R.O.M.I.S.E. means protecting and restoring the order of mankind with the initiative to serving elders. On May 20, Oliver High School continued in that mold by holding a career day convention from 9-11 a.m. in their auditorium to help guide their students down the right career paths.

by Martha Irvine

CHICAGO (AP)—What’s that? A young college grad lecturing her elders about online privacy?

Mother, son, graduate at Clarion

Two stories of determination reached a happy conclusion last month during Clarion University’s commencement ceremony, when Nathan Griffin and his mother, Phyllis, both received undergraduate degrees in liberal studies.

Both overcame challenges to reach their goal of a college degree—Phyllis, who started at Clarion in 1973 and left to get married; and Nathan, who had to sit out a semester and earn money so he could return to Clarion from his native San Antonio, Texas, and finish his degree.

Helping teens become better adults...80 students attend SHYNE Conference

Orlana Darkins and Darnell Drewery didn’t know that the many postings on Facebook from teenagers wanting to win Shyne Awards and become successful adults would lead to the first SHYNE Conference Workshop.

The SHYNE Awards recognizes the positive achievements of young adults aged 13-19. The initiative was begun three years ago by Darkins and Drewery.
