The Billy Eckstine Youth Vocal All-Star Ensemble and The Billy Strayhorn Youth Jazz All-Star Ensemble, a program component of Pittsburgh’s Next Generation of Music Legends are headed to Washington, D.C., April 23-25 for the sixth annual Big Band Jazz Festival.

Some of the activities include master class jazz workshops by renowned music educators at the Sylvan Amphitheater and live concert performances by the students at the theater and the National Mall.

Dr. King essay contest winners honored

Citizens Bank announced the winners of the ninth annual “Expressions of Freedom” writing contest. The winners was recognized at an awards ceremony  Jan 18 at the August Wilson Center. Citizens also provided free admission to the August Wilson Center on that day for “Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the August Wilson Center.”

Participants were asked to write an essay based on the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Each winner received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond from Citizens Bank and the opportunity to record select portions of their essay for broadcast on KISS-FM or WPXI-TV throughout February in honor of Black History Month. Pittsburgh Public Schools, the New Pittsburgh Courier, WPXI-TV and KISS-FM were the co-sponsors.

CORO presents King Leadership, Diversity Awards

The Coro Center For Civic Leadership held its third annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership and Diversity Awards Jan. 18 at Heinz Field.

The Leadership Award was presented to an individual who exemplifies outstanding leadership in business, nonprofits or government. The Diversity Award was given to two organizations—one for an organization of more than 50 employees and one for less than 50 employees.

EntrepreneuringYouth honors Dr. King’s teaching

In honor of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., EntrepreneuringYouth sponsored a program Jan. 18, to help young people learn how to build economic strength for their families and community at the Pittsburgh Technology Council Offices.

Middle school youths immersed in an Entrepreneurial Education Program provided by The Franklin Center of Beaver County (Aliquippa) and Entrepreneuring Youth, were hosted by Innovation Works to meet with the founders/CEOs of diverse local businesses to learn about business creation and ownership as a pathway to academic and economic success.

King honored through dance, song

MUSICAL TRIBUTE—Music of celebration was in the air Jan. 16 as the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater brought a day of tribute honoring Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Free to the public, the event showcased performances from CAPA High School, the Alumni Theater Company, Hip Hop on L.O.C.K, ABAFASI and the August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble. Featured were song, dance, poetry and African drumming that lifted the audience to their feet. Local organizations New Voices Pittsburgh, Thomas-Merton Center, Women of Color for Reproductive Justice and Fair Housing Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, Inc., hosted information tables in the lobby inviting all to upcoming activities throughout the community, honoring the ideals of Dr. King.
