Jesse Jackson: Cavs’ owner’s comments personify a ‘slave master mentality’
Category: Sports Written by Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP)—Jesse Jackson criticized Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert on Sunday, saying Gilbert sees LeBron James as a “runaway slave” and that the owner’s comments after the free-agent forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger.

Shortly after James announced his decision last week, Gilbert fired off an incendiary letter to Cleveland’s fans, ripping the 25-year-old and promising to deliver a title before James wins one. He called James’ decision “cowardly” and later told The Associated Press he believes James quit during a handful of Cavaliers playoff games.
“He has gotten a free pass,” Gilbert told the AP in a phone interview late July 8. “People have covered up for (James) for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is.”

‘Now it’s time to swim!’ Bosh’s decision pulled things together for Heat
Category: Sports Written by Associated Press
MIAMI (AP)—In Chris Bosh, the Miami Heat got a power forward and a power broker.
Sure, Heat president Pat Riley pulled together the deal, Dwyane Wade had a county renamed in his honor and the anticipation of LeBron James’ decision turned into a drama unlike anything the NBA has likely ever seen.
But the first domino that fell into place was Bosh—and if he went elsewhere, the other two stars almost surely would have as well.
It went down like this: Bosh told Wade he wanted to play in Miami, which immediately convinced the 2006 NBA finals MVP to spurn Chicago’s offer and stay with the Heat. About 48 hours later, Wade got a call from James, telling him it’d be a South Beach three-for-all.

BYAM method teaches ‘a lifestyle change’
Category: Sports Written by Genea Webb - Courier Features Writer
Curtis Smith took his love for martial arts and parlayed it into a formula for self-defense that has been used to prevent sexual, physical and criminal assaults.
The Buy Yourself A Minute Method of Personal Protection uses a behavior modification approach that teaches people how to avoid incidents before they happen. The method teaches people how to increase awareness and recognition skills so they can identify and evaluate threatening situations.
“A lot of professionals asked me to put information into a format that is easy to understand,” said Smith, a University of Pittsburgh police officer and martial arts instructor. “The BYAM Method believes people are creatures of habit, conditioned to specific behaviors. With my method, people learn how to protect themselves on the street, in the car, in the home, on the phone and in many other places.”

James could mean millions for Miami tourism
Category: Sports Written by Associated Press
MIAMI (AP)—Tourism promoters say LeBron James is giving South Florida a boost already. The reservations team at the Fountainebleau Resort in Miami Beach says they’re getting asked about packages that include Heat tickets.
Prime 112 says athletes, sportscasters and regular diners want to know if they’ll still be able to get tables at the South Beach restaurant that’s bracing for even more popularity with celebrities.
Real estate agents say James’ move drove up the price of at least one condo near the AmericanAirlines Arena, and home buyers want Heat tickets as part of the deal.
The star already has snack named for him: the “Le-Brat James” bratwurst at the Shake Shack in South Beach.

Inside Conditions...In the midnight hour
Category: Sports Written by Aubrey Bruce - Courier Sports Columnist
On Aug. 7, in Canton, Ohio, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator and former Detroit Lions defensive back Dick LeBeau will arrive to remove the cover of mortality from his bronzed likeness and usher his accomplishments as an athlete and coach into the realm of immortality (LeBeau was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round). First and foremost, I usually don’t get mushy, especially about men who earn more money in a year than I will probably rake in a lifetime but economic issues aside, Coach LeBeau is truly a good guy. Not the kind of fella that speaks to you when the cameras are rolling but forgets your name as soon as the lights grow dim. Dick LeBeau is a gentleman and a scholar and the current athletes plying their trade in professional football should maybe study some of his “life film” on how to maintain a solid work ethic and professionalism on and off the gridiron. I have covered LeBeau for over two decades and as an old politician I knew from Lawrenceville. The late magistrate John J. Fiorucci used to say, “He won’t change on you, he’ll bring you change.”
