Rhinestone Cowboys

I was not assuming anything one way or the other when I booked my flight to Dallas after the Steelers defeated the Browns to claim the AFC North crown and the second seed in the AFC playoffs. Actually I was being prudent because I figured if the Steelers did not make it to Super Bowl XLV, the most dough that I would sacrifice would be the $75 re-booking fee to travel on another date to a different destination. And on top of that imagine the difficulty and cost of attempting to book a flight after this Sunday, again assuming that the Steelers are victorious over the Jets in the AFC Championship game.

City League Roundup

by Malik Vincent
For New Pittsburgh Courier

The Carrick boys’ basketball team is still rolling strong as the surprise team in the City League with a perfect 5-0 conference mark. They are 8-3 overall.

Allderdice coach, Andre McDonald called it out in our League preview that ran back in the Dec. 1 edition, saying:”I think Carrick is going to shock some people this year. They’ll have some good athletes and will hang in there from what I’ve seen out of certain players over the summer.”

City League Boys and Girls Basketball Roundup

by Malik Vincent

Unfortunately for City League teams playing in area tip-off tournaments last weekend, none could muster more than a split in their two games.

On the boys side, four teams earned a split.

1. Carrick participated in the Brentwood Tournament. They won their first game 74-34 over the host Spartans on Friday night. They then dropped an 85-82 thriller to Meadville in the championship game on Saturday.

North Allegheny junior guard Aiken follows in father’s footsteps

by Malik Vincent
For New Pittsburgh Courier

From 1983-87, Curtis Aiken was a star guard on the Pitt men’s basketball team. He was named to the University’s All-Centennial second team. The former McDonald’s All-American was the first-ever that the Panthers signed in their over 100-year history.

Now it’s time for his daughter to shine.
