LOS ANGELES (AP)—He was a coach when coaching meant something else, long before the job became a pathway to riches and fame. A coach when student-athletes were really students, and the thought of making millions of dollars rolling out basketballs in the gym seemed preposterous. A coach when it meant more to mold the lives of young men than to proclaim his own greatness.
“Learn as if you were going to live forever,” he would tell his players. “Live as if you were going to die tomorrow.”

Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga pitched a perfect game with imperfect results.
Shortly after the game in which he beat the Cleveland Indians 3-0 on a “1 hitter,” MLB declined to comment on first base umpire Jim Joyce botching the call that took a no-run, no-hit perfect game from Galarraga. Commissioner Bud Selig has apparently decided to do nothing about it. Why? Well, I’m guessing to preserve the psuedo-purity or the economic sanctity of the game.

Wallace on fast track to replace Santonio Holmes

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Mike Wallace is on the fast track to replacing Santonio Holmes as the Steelers’ primary deep passing threat. Byron Leftwich needed only one practice to realize that.
During a 7-on-7 passing drill recently in a voluntary practice, Wallace beat his man cleanly, but Leftwich’s pass landed behind the receiver. The timing and precision needed to correctly execute the fly pattern weren’t there.

Fabulous Five! Penn Hills girls capture state championship

| STATE CHAMPS—The Penn Hills girls 400-meter relay team (shown after winning the Baldwin Invitational) from left: Deshaun Squires, Christina Roberson, Paige Fields and Iman Wilkerson, won the PIAA AAA 400-meter relay with a time of 47.37. These four girls and teammate Jordan Lee racked up 48 points to win the PIAA Girls AAA team championship at Shippensburg University, May 29. Wilkerson finished third in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash. Wilkerson, Squires, Roberson and Lee won the 1600-meter relay and set a new state record with a time of 3:46.31. Penn Hills becomes the first team from the WPIAL to win the team title in AAA.

Ex-coach says he was forced to resign over race

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP)—Savannah State University’s ex-football coach has sued the school in federal court, saying the historically Black college forced him to resign because he’s White and engaged to marry a Black woman.
Robby Wells’ lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, says Savannah State administrators discriminated against him because of his race when they told him to resign or be fired in January—a month after Wells had signed a one-year contract extension.
