Oil spill makes America and BP the new odd couple
Category: Opinion
(REAL TIMES MEDIA)—Imagine you have a roommate. You didn’t necessarily want a roommate, but you live a pretty expensive lifestyle, and you’d rather have a roommate than budget your money better to actually afford your place. You and your roommate have a decent relationship, occasionally you bump heads but essentially you need each other. Unfortunately there’s one big problem, your roommate is messy. Every couple of months he makes a huge mess in the kitchen and never gets around to washing the dishes. No matter how many times you tell him to clean up, no matter how much the kitchen smells, or how high the dishes pile he never gets around to cleaning up the kitchen. Morally everybody knows that you should just refuse to wash dishes until the problem gets so bad the roommate has to clean it up, but you just can’t wait that long. Whether he likes it or not President Barack Obama is going to have to “wash the dishes” with the BP gulf spill, unless Americans are willing to dump their oily “roommate.”

Interracial marriages: Blacks are the last choice of other groups
Category: Opinion Written by George E. Curry
(NNPA)—Most news stories about a new study showing that 22 percent of Black male newlyweds and 9 percent of African-American females marry outside their race neglected to report another major finding: When Whites, Hispanics and Asians decide to marry outside their group, African-Americans rank last in their choice of mates.
A study by the Pew Research Center titled, “Marrying Out: One-in-Seven New U.S. Marriages is Interracial or Interethnic,” received widespread national attention. And many saw it as yet another confirmation that Black females are in a no-win predicament when it comes to marriage, especially marriage to another African-American.

Obama’s oil spill leadership
Category: Opinion
(NNPA)—The charge that the oil spill in the Gulf is Obama’s Katrina is bogus because there was no comparison between the swift manner in which he deployed his administration to deal with the crisis and Bush’s approach to Katrina.
The oil explosion happened on April 20 and the Coast Guard was deployed the next day, long before Bush engaged FEMA to bring resources into Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. That same day, Obama sent the No. 2 man in the Interior Department to New Orleans and the Minerals Management Service established a headquarters near the scene of the explosion.

Misreading the Tea (Party) leaves
Category: Opinion Written by Raynard Jackson
I was stunned by last Tuesday night’s election comments from all the talking heads. In listening to many political pundits (Democrats and Republicans), you would have thought Sarah Palin had just become God!
How can anyone with the least bit of a brain credit Palin with many of the Republican victories that night, especially among the female victors?
Only once in recent history can one credibly argue that an endorsement by an individual had any measureable effect on an election—and that election was in 2008.

Rand Paul is not a racist but…
Category: Opinion Written by Courier Newsroom
by George Davis
(NNPA)—Rand Paul and his defenders say he’s not a racist. He calls himself a Libertarian…If you have webbed feet and you quack and waddle, you can call yourself a pigeon, but you’re probably a duck.
Rand Paul says he thinks the government should not make laws to prevent racist behavior by private business owners. He says: “private business owners should be able to decide whether they want to serve Black people, or gays, or any other minority groups.” I guess he thinks they should not be able to decide whether they want to serve Whites. But he’s not a racist.
