Parker elected new NAACP president

By a slender 26-vote margin, Constance Parker has been elected president of the NAACP Pittsburgh Chapter and will succeed M. Gayle Moss, who led the chapter for eight years.

“I feel good,” said Parker. “I think the people want to move forward and change the community, have more diversity and address the economy and education. So I feel good. I think God has me on a mission.”

The final tally last night gave Parker a narrow 171 to 145 victory over Deborah Walker. The membership also elected Charlene R. McAbee, first vice president; Marilyn Barnett Waters 2nd vice president, and Johnnie Miott, 3rd vice president. Anita Walker, secretary and Morton Stanfield Jr., treasurer were uncontested.
