Light the Night
OCT. 4—The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will host its annual Light the Night Walk 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at Heinz Field, 100 Art Rooney Ave., North Shore. This is a two-mile walk fundraiser to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Participants will carry red illuminated balloons while cancer patients and survivors will carry a white one. OCT. 5—The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation will host the 125th Anniversary Celebration of Wilkinsburg. The celebration will include a community reception on Oct. 5 from 6-10 p.m. at Hosanna House; a community parade on Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. at 1230 Park Ave.; a Gala on Oct. 6 from 7-11 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in Monroeville; and an Ecumenical Community Worship Service on Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. at Wilkinsburg High School. OCT. 6—The American Diabetes Association will host Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes at 10 a.m. at Station Square, Station Square Drive, South Side. This event is to raise awareness about diabetes and money to fight a disease that affects so many individuals. Registration is requested. OCT. 6—The African-American Heritage Parade Association Inc. will host the 25th African American Heritage Day Parade at 11 a.m. at Downtown. The event will feature Wendell Freeland of the Tuskegee Airmen. There will also be a series of events from Oct. 4-6 at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, which include an exhibit, a job fair, a community health fair, a jazz concert with Sean Jones and more. Infinite Scholarship Fair
OCT. 10—The Infinite Scholars Program and the United States Army ROTC will host the Infinite Scholarship Fair from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Petra International Ministries, 235 East Gate Dr., East Hills. There will be representatives from colleges and universities on-site accepting eligible students and providing full and partial scholarships. Students should bring transcripts, scores, letters of recommendations and essays on the Importance of Higher Education. OCT. 11—Three Rivers Youth will host its Autumn Soiree from 6-8:30 p.m. at the LeMont Restaurant, 1114 Grandview Ave., Mount Washington. This event is to raise awareness and support the TRY and its programs that benefit abused, neglected, runaway, homeless youth and their families. Reservations are required.
