Pittsburgh Job Corps takes top honors

Pittsburgh Job Corps finished first at the 19th Annual District Academic and Career Olympics held Aug. 11 in Philadelphia. Myles Case, Xavier Lewis, Ashley McNary, Lorenzo Prischak, Phillip Rose and Sara Tetley, under the direction of their coach, Karen Bobick, defeated four teams from Job Corps centers in Mississippi, West Virginia, Maryland and Philadelphia. Pittsburgh will represent its center at the final, multi-regional competition in Ocean City, Md., Oct. 7.

Individual winners at the multi-regional competition also will win laptops donated by Management and Training Corp., the largest, single Job Corps contractor of the U.S. Department of Labor, which manages the national program. Thirty-seven Job Corps centers from the Mid-Atlantic, Boston and Atlanta regions participated in the district competition this year. Job Corps is the nation’s largest and oldest federally-funded job training and education program for “at-promise” youth ages 16-24. With 123 centers nationwide, the program trains and educates approximately 100,000 youths each year in more than 75 career areas.
