Text messages in McNair shooting released PDF Print E-mail

(NNPA)—Text messages between slain NFL star Steve McNair and his girlfriend show that he had affection for the woman and was not planning to end their affair, while she was distressed about money issues in the 24 hours leading up to their July 4 murder-suicide.

Nashville, Tenn., police on Oct. 20 released approximately 50 text messages between former Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans quarterback McNair and Sahel Kazemi as part of the McNair case file. The file, which includes notes from police interviews and crime scene observations, was made public shortly after results of the police investigation were questioned in a CBS News report.

—These photos show Steve McNair, left, in a 2003 file photo and Sahel Kazemi in this undated booking file photo from the Davidson County Sheriff.

In several messages, Kazemi complained of not being able to breathe and needing to rest. McNair was concerned, offering to meet her and take care of her. In an apparent effort to make her feel better and to resolve her immediate financial issues, McNair transferred $2,000 she needed to pay bills.

The last text messages outlined the couple’s plans to meet at the condo where their bodies were found, with McNair saying he would arrive after he got his children to sleep and Kazemi promising to leave the front door open.

Police said they remain confident in their conclusion that McNair and Kazemi’s deaths were the result of a murder-suicide and not foul play.

“McNair was seated on the sofa and was likely asleep,” the police report states in part. “The totality of the evidence leads to the conclusion that Kazemi shot McNair in the left side of his head, shot him twice in the chest and then put the gun to the right side of his head and shot him again. It is concluded that Kazemi sat on the sofa to McNair’s left in such a way that she would fall into McNair’s lap upon committing suicide by shooting herself in the head.”

“It was determined that Mr. McNair was murdered by his female friend, Sahel Kazemi, with whom he had a dating relationship,” the report states. “Kazemi then committed suicide. No evidence has been developed to the contrary.”
