Oprah’s next big success
Category: Opinion Written by Marc H. Morial
(NNPA)—When Oprah recently announced she would be leaving her syndicated talk show in 2011 to start her own cable network, I was reminded of the impact her phenomenal success has had on the lives of millions of people around the world. Her accomplishments are especially remarkable due to the fact that she rose from a childhood of extreme poverty, abuse and hardship to reign for 25 years as the queen of daytime television. Through her many ventures, including Harpo Productions, O Magazine and her movies, books and philanthropy, Oprah has established herself as an iconic force in the communications industry and an inspiration for people everywhere.

Let’s march, then what do we do?
Category: Opinion Written by Louis 'Hop' Kendrick
We have marched over the years, and highlighted a multitude of problems that had relegated Blacks to the status of second-class citizens. A number of problems have been addressed and at a point in time in this nation a number of people who looked different than us were arm in arm with us, but the nation’s mood has changed among too many Blacks and Whites.
I have been a witness and a participant in so many marches that I have lost count. The marchers numbered from two to numbers that were staggering, but regretfully once the marching, speech making and high fives were over, the problems we marched for still existed. It reminds you of the statement that rap with no map does not change anything.

Guest editorial: What should brothers learn from Obama? Courage.

I figured it was only a matter of time before some news organization would weigh in on how Black men were living up to their man duties a year after voters put one of them in the White House.
So CNN recently visited a Dallas barbershop and some social service organizations to gauge the Obama phenomena; to see whether the nation’s first Black president had inspired more of them to become better fathers and mentors, and to see themselves as pillars, and not pebbles, of their communities.

10 years of social networking sites and we haven’t learned a thing
Category: Opinion
(REAL TIMES MEDIA)—Ten years ago, the majority of Black America was introduced to the world of social networking sites when Blackplanet went online. It was one of the first social networking sites online and the first to be targeted specifically at Black Americans. People met future spouses, business partners, lovers and a whole array of dramatic situations that all began with a quick search for adventure. Now with the explosion of sites like MySpace and Facebook so much of our lives are filtered through the online world that many are forgetting about our basic human nature. Despite what some sensational news stories may tell us, these websites haven’t really changed us that much, they’ve just given everyone another outlet to act crazy, when they would’ve been crazy anyway.
