For the last few years, we, the people of the United States, have had the opportunity to rally around a president who personally embodies the hallowed phrase “Black and White together” and its companion “we shall overcome one day.” President Barack Obama is uniquely qualified by his individual heritage and his avowed ideals to enable this nation “to rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.”
For a nation still scarred by racial divisions and still riven by discords this is a marvelous opportunity to slay some of these demons. We must not be deceived by the crafty canards of people who would fan the embers of bigotry. We must prove we wish to live together as brother and sister citizens rather than perish together as fools.
Listen to the man; understand the singular circumstances of his background and upbringing.
Judge him on the basis of his character not on the color of his skin. The President has lived and is living the true American Dream.
I am not saying re-elect President Obama because he has African heritage; I am not saying reject him because of it. I am saying, give him fair consideration; hear not the cacophony of lies and smears about him; hear him. Consider the real President Obama, not the caricature relentlessly promoted by his detractors and political opponents. Consider what he stands up for and speaks out for. Give him the same fair hearing, the same real chance to make a case any incumbent president deserves. If we do this, we will give ourselves a real chance as well. We will give ourselves and this nation a real chance to be what we and it might and ought to be.
Now is the time for us to renew the nation’s origination in liberty and its dedication to the proposition of human equality. We must evoke the mystic chords of memory that stretch from every patriot grave and battlefield and swell the chorus of a ‘more perfect union.’ We must bring renewed devotion to the achievement of one nation, indivisible, with liberty, equality, justice, and prosperity for all.”
This is our time, and we must shine.
This is the hour, this is the year. Barack Obama’s re-election is our last, best chance to demonstrate that first and foremost we are American citizens determined to apply our citizenship in the fullness of its meaning and to extend it fully to all persons born in the United States. Despite the many dangers, detours, and delays through which we have safely come, deep in my heart, I still do believe, that by coming together, working together, and sticking together we shall overcome one day in November and ensure that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from this earth!
As Sen. Ted Kennedy declared shortly before his death, “the work begins anew, the hope rises again, and the dream lives on!” He was right then. We must follow this true compass now throughout 2012 and reelect President Barack Obama.R. Lawrence Conley
