It is the oldest African-American Women’s Club in western Pennsylvania. The intent of the six charter members was to promote literacy, when higher education seemed an impossibility for women, particularly women of color.

Life’s choices...Group offers alternative to abortion

by Karen Harris Brooks
For New Pittsburgh Courier

In 1985, The Pregnancy Care Center opened in Wexford to provide a wide range of pregnancy-related services. It was the beginning of a ministry that would “defend, rescue and deliver” countless newborns who continue to make a difference in the lives of those who fight to save them.

Serving women in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, the Crossroads Pregnancy Services also became a reality. These two professional clinics united to form the Women’s Choice Network, an alternative choice to abortion. Current locations include Wexford, Oakland, Monroeville Mall and more recently, Hosanna House in Wilkinsburg.

In my travels, winter 2009

I was fortunate enough to see the movie “Precious” on Nov. 6 at the Harris Theater. The movie was a part of the Three Rivers Film Festival. It seems like the film will not be released in Pittsburgh. The audience was asked to write to distribution company, LionsGate and request that the film be shown in Pittsburgh. I went to the “Precious” website and found a phone number for you to call. The number is 1-877-370-6824.

I’ve already called it and I had to give my name and e-mail address. The information is going to be passed on to LionsGate and if there is enough interest the movie, will come to Pittsburgh.

I took a look at where the movie is going to open in the next 30 days and saw Youngstown and Cleveland, Ohio, on the list. How did Youngstown beat out Pittsburgh? Don’t they know that we are the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers?
