Town Hall MeetingJULY 12—The New Deal Coalition for Economic Party and Justice will host a Town Hall Meeting on the Addison Terrace Development from 6-8 p.m. at the Elise Hillman Auditorium, 1825 Centre Ave., Hill District. This is an opportunity for residents to come out and hear how economic and community government funds are being used for housing, employment and business opportunities in the Hill District and City of Pittsburgh. Stroke Survivors Casting Call
JULY 13—The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association will host a Stroke Survivors Casting Call at the American Heart Association, Four Gateway Center, Suite 1300, 444 Liberty Ave., Downtown. This is the deadline for Stroke Survivors who are interested in having their stories taped for the association’s campaign to bring awareness to the community. The taping will be held July 26. Fashion Showcase
JULY 15—Laced Apparel will host The Show 2012 Fashion Showcase at 7 p.m. at the New Hazlett Theatre, 6 Allegheny Square, North Side. The show will feature several up and coming Pittsburgh fashion designers and boutiques. A VIP reception is also available. For more information, call 412-576-9376.
Free swimming lessons
JULY 17—The Allegheny County Parks Department will host free Swimming Lessons from 10-10:45 a.m. at Boyce, North, Settlers Cabin and South Parks. Tuesdays and Thursdays in July, qualified instructors will be on hand to give swimming lessons to kids ages 5 and up. Children with last names beginning with A through K will meet July 17 and 24. Summer Institute
JULY 18—The University of Pittsburgh’s Center on Race and Social Problems will host its Summer Institute from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Learning, 20th floor, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. This is one of four institutes that will address racial disparities within a different context and examine the problems, causes and specific actions that can improve the situation. The topics are “Programs to Diminish Racial Disparities in Diabetes” and “Promising Practices for Decreasing Adult Health Disparities.” The guest speakers will be Miriam Seidel and Rhonda Moore Johnson. Basketball camp
JULY 25—The Jakim Donaldson PROMISE organization will host a Basketball Camp from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Perry High School, 3875 Perrysville Ave., North Side. This is a free camp for boys and girls ages 8-18 and will run through July 27. Space is limited and registration will take place at The North Shore Community Alliance, North Franklin St., North Side. SummerFood program
ONGOING—The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will host their SummerFood Program at more than 100 sites through Allegheny County. From now through Aug. 17, the program will offer free breakfast, lunch and recreational programs to children up to 18 years old, as well as eligible individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities 19 year or older. Farmers’ markets
ONGOING—Citiparks will host its Community Farmers’ Market from 3:30-7:30 p.m. at five locations around the City of Pittsburgh. Monday through Friday, for the next five months, markets will be located in East Liberty, South Side, Carrick, Bloomfield, Beechview, Downtown and the North Side.
