SONYA TOLER
You can take the girl out of the city, but you know the rest. Sonya Toler, former city editor for the New Pittsburgh Courier, is returning to lead the Communications team for Pittsburgh Councilman Bill Peduto’s mayoral campaign.
“I saw this as a great opportunity to contribute once again to the future of the city,” she said. “I think Bill Peduto is the best candidate to lead the city forward because he believes in economic development. Look at the success of his district. He wants to see that success replicated city-wide.”
In addition to her work at the Courier, Toler’s 21-year career in media included stints at Pittsburgh Business Times as a staff writer, the Pittsburgh International Airport Magazine as managing editor, and a number of freelance reporting and editing positions. She is also the former communications director for the Allegheny Conference on Economic Development and spent five years as Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission of African America Affairs under Gov. Ed Rendell.
Though her appointment had been rumored for some time, Peduto did not make the announcement until Jan. 24, when he also announced that former Pittsburgh Public Works Director Guy Costa would be his campaign chairman. Toler’s first official day is Feb. 1.
