Indonesian film portrays Obama’s early years

BANDUNG, Indonesia (AP)—Young Barry Obama is struggling with his pingpong shot. Or rather, 12-year-old Hasan Faruq Ali is struggling to play left-handed in imitation of the character he is portraying in a new Indonesian film, “Little Obama.”

“Hasan has the walk, he has the posture of Barry,” said Slamet Djanuadi, a consultant on the film and a childhood friend of President Barack Obama when he lived in Indonesia from 1967 to 1971.

“But Barry was a better pingpong player,” he laughed, watching Hasan hit the ball off the table.

Mandela reunites with World Cup trophy

JOHANNESBURG (AP)—Nelson Mandela reminisced with fellow anti-apartheid activists and met with top football officials May 6, one month ahead of South Africa’s upcoming World Cup, which he helped bring to Africa for the first time.

The 91-year-old former president, who retired from public life in 2004, met with FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke and chief local organizer Danny Jordaan, who brought the 18-carat, solid gold World Cup trophy to the Nelson Mandela Foundation building in Johannesburg. The meeting was held in private, with no journalists present, though FIFA later released photographs.

South African police link explosives to right wing

JOHANNESBURG (AP)—South African police have confiscated a large cache of weapons and arrested suspects linked to right-wing groups, the police ministry said May 6.

Zweli Mnisi, a spokesman for Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, told The AP that police acting on tips raided sites in the capital and a western town and found large caches of explosives, illegal guns and ammunition. He said there was a “strong linkage to right-wing operations.”

Police commissioner desperate to avoid Obama World Cup security challenge

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP)—South Africa’s police commissioner says he hopes the United States is knocked out of the World Cup in the first round to avoid the massive security challenge of a visit by President Barack Obama.

General Bheki Cele told parliament in Cape Town May 7 it was “50-50” whether Obama would visit Africa’s first World Cup, but they had been told that if the U.S. team makes the knockout stages Obama might jet in.
