Southern Africa: Emerging Economic Independence

The face is Africa is indeed a mosaic of images, most of which are reflections of the stark poverty and harsh political realities. But out of these ashes of despair, heroic challenges are being mounted. Africa economists are now moving away from crippling foreign aid to more investment type solutions to Africa's problems. However, in order to do that these same astute and finally alert economists see the need to become of owners of the means of production in their faux independent states. Until this is done, the face of Africa is pretty going to remain the same. There is one writer that seems consistently putting forth compelling expositions as to the "why" of all this poverty on a continent that could, with its abundant resources, become literally a garden of Eden.
Zuma's Presidency: Filled With Questions

Questions are being raised about violence against legitimate protest in South Africa. Zuma himself is on record as saying: "[He] has often said he seeks to protect South Africa's diversity and unify its disparate groups." Well, some say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. First, SA freedom of speech is under attack, especially liberation themes that were part of bringing down apartheid in the first place. Next, a populist member of a youth group in that country has been ousted for "causing dissention" within the country. Then after some two decades into democracy, the economic state of affairs for the hoi polloi is no different from what it was under apartheid. Lastly, too many power institutions are out beyond the government and the people, inter alia: the media and SA's economic base, said to be in minority hands. So as the president makes pretty with words and florid abstractions, the people are still waiting for this much vaunted "rainbow democracy."
