Attention New Pittsburgh

May I respectfully ask why the New Pittsburgh Courier would capitalize "blackface"? And you have a habit of capitalizing "nigger." Am I to understand that you intend to give respect to terms that are epithets? The "blackface" as well as "yellowface" (for Asians) period was one of racist parody intended for comic relief and humiliation for the depicted. For example, Americans of Asian descent spoke out against the use of caucasian actors in "yellowface" in the role of Asians. In fact, a Viennese actress, Luise Rainer, played Olan in "The Good Earth," to the chagrin of Pearl S. Buck, a long critic of the practice. Then another Viennese actress won the role of a "native" girl in "blackface" coveted by Lena Horne in "White Cargo." Suffice it to say, then, that the "blackface"/"ye llowface" period in the entertainment world should not be given the misguided respect of capitalization. It's laughable, again, that you consider the epithet worthy of respect, e.g., "Nigger."

Hikind: No Need for a Costume

Hikind should have looked at the man in the mirror. He didn'I need a mask, really. Remember the comic routine at Halloween. Someone puts on a mask and says boo, takes it off, and everybody screams. So it kinda looks as if it he would do best to continue his day job. The apology, too, is disingenuous. He has supported too many right-wing themes, doubtless including anti affirmative action stances. He has even recycled that old pipeline to God posturing used by the right wing. However, he should be reminded that not too long ago that statement would have been that "God doesn't hear the prayers of Jews." You see, he's not the first bigot to know what's on God's mind. But what stands out the most is that the days of grand statesmen/human itarians such as Jake Javits, Abraham Ribicoff, Gen. David Sarnoff, Julius Rosenwald, and his daughter Edith Rosenwald Stern are long gone. We're facing trailer trash gone to Harvard!
