Right, per the superintendent the study is to be based on existing information- they just need to remove the costs to deal with asbestos plaster, now that we know the plaster does not have asbestos, and costs for the unnecessary reconfiguration of classrooms. For some reason, board members are still waiting for the instructions/ specifications to the contractors that were to be provided to them in advance of the estimate being done, so that any issues can be cleared up before an estimate is reached. I emailed to the author of this article, asking why we should keep Peabody rather than Schenley, waiting for a response.

They board isn't going to get 5.2 million. Most of that money will go to paying off debt owed on the building. So they just up pretty much breaking even, and no studies like this don't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Uh, why should we say goodbye to Schenley instead of saying goodbye to Peabody, which is in a growing commercial area and should bring good money to the district but if retained will cost a bundle in renovations?

Ulish, Schenley High School was important because of the people -- and the building -- but I agree it is past time to let go of the building as a Pittsburgh public school. As Schenley students, we knew the unique, stately limestone triangle, the first school in the nation to cost more than a million dollars, was a special place. We felt special being there. Communities change, enrollments fall and buildings age, however, and I look forward to coming home and seeing the building open again, whether as an apartment building or a school of the arts or for youth with dyslexia. Like a sculpture, the revived building will stand as a monument to its service as Schenley High School. -- Jim Crutchfield, '65 Marblehead, Ohio
