A Truly Sad Day For Me - Al Goodman of the Moments/Ray, Goodman & Brown passes

by Bob Davis
For New Pittsburgh Courier
Obviously this has been a very sad week here at Soul-Patrol. We have lost one of our most dynamic and influential members, someone that I will personally miss a great deal. However it occured to me that perhaps I have been just a bit to personal with respect to my reflections about Al Goodman and in doing so may have minimized his actual impact and influence in the world of music. We don't ever want to do that with respect to the legacy of The Moments/Ray, Goodman & Brown. So I thought that I would put something together that was a bit more traditional to mark his passing. At the end is the information about Al's services, which will be this Monday morning in Englewood, NJ...

East Liberty’s teen splendor spotlighted

Janera Solomon wants to showcase the myriad of summer fun that exists in the community of East Liberty.

This summer, we feature family-friendly activities and performances including free workshops with visual artists,” said Joseph Hall, programming manager at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater.

Reflections on jazz/R&B organist Ludwig

Even though he would be the only one or one of a very few White faces on stage or in the building during his early years, he continued to play his music, which was a combination of jazz and R&B on an instrument few have been able to master.

Gene Ludwig, a leading figure on the Pittsburgh jazz scene for half a century and one of the select few to master the Hammond organ, died in West Penn-Forbes Regional Campus July 14, at the age of 72.

Earth Wind & Fire still burnin’ up the stage

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Earth Wind & Fire’s original fans from the Pittsburgh region may recall the group’s legendary 1970s performances, first at the Stanley Theater and later shows at the Civic Arena—retracted dome and all.

Recently, this reviewer witnessed the current version of this legendary act, days before they rocked the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. Needless to say, the EWF performance is just about as solid as it was during their heyday years in the ’70s and ’80s.

Their unforgettable July 1 performance at the James Brown Arena in downtown Augusta, proved that.
