Encouraging young girls to love themselves

Gospel music pioneers Mary Mary want young girls to celebrate the unique person that God created them to be.

That’s why they penned the book “Be U: Be Honest, Be Beautiful, Be Intentional, Be Strong, Be You!”

“We have a lot of sisters and female friends and we came across people who didn’t want to be themselves so we wrote a book to celebrate the good in young people,” said Erica Campbell, 37, from her California home. Her younger sister, Tina, couldn’t participate in the interview because she had laryngitis. The two are internationally known as Mary Mary, one of the hottest groups in gospel music history.

Cuisine...Salt Sense for Deli Lovers

Love the taste of deli meats and cheeses but wonder how it fits into a salt sensible lifestyle? The answer is, easily! Like much of the advice regarding the food we eat—from fats to sugars to salt—most nutrition experts will agree that the best approach to healthful eating is moderation. One of the ways that food lovers have found to live within health organization guidelines of no more than 2,400 milligrams of salt per day is by selecting lower sodium foods that offer great taste and by making wise choices when adding seasonings.

In the news

Listening and watching the news is better than fiction; it is full of things that make you go hmmmm.

The recent debate over the number of days that mail will be delivered has me concerned.

I like to receive mail every day. I’m sure I’m not the only person that feels this way. There is just something about looking in that box and finding magazines, letters and yes, even that unwanted bill.

Many people don’t remember this but way back when, during the Christmas holiday, mail was delivered twice in one day.

Celebrating Gwen’s Girls

The invite in a beautiful shade of purple, Gwen’s favorite color, simply stated “One Girl In One Neighborhood, With One Chance to get it right.”

On Feb. 20, supporters of Gwen’s Girls were invited to recognize the accomplishments of Gwen’s Girls Inc., a gender specific agency founded by the late Pittsburgh Police Commander Gwendolyn Elliott.

From the very beginning, Elliot was destined to be a champion for women and girls. She began to break down barriers for women as early as 1964, when she entered the male-dominated military. She continued to break barriers when she became one of the first African-American female police officers in 1973—and eventually became the first woman promoted to sergeant and, ultimately, commander.
