Kamerouyou and Macellaro win state Golden Gloves championships

Pittsburgh is turning into the mecca of boxing as evidenced by the standing room only crowd that packed Saddle Ridge in Station Square April 17. The State Golden Gloves Open Class Championships is a show that brings a genuine who’s who of past and present stars.

CHAMPIONS—2010 Pennsylvania State Golden Gloves champions Anthony Burgin, Keivon Paschl, Donovan Malovich, Robby Dinero, Mark Rideout, Tyrell Colston, Damon Allen, Khalib Whitmore, Andreas Kamerouyou and Vinnie Macellaro.

The matches this year were outstanding. The Pennsylvania Golden Gloves never had it so good. And there was one among them who proved he was a “cut above the rest”—Andreas Kamerouyou, this year’s Apollo and amateur boxing’s new Sun God, brought the fans from the edge of their seat to cheering on their feet with his explosive power. Kamerouyou, 152-pounder from South Park Boxing Club, defeated Stafford Weatherburne of Harrisburg to earn a gold medal and a trip to Little Rock, Ark., May 3-8, for the National Golden Gloves Tournament.

In the mix

by Aubrey Bruce
For New Pittsburgh Courier

The “green weenie,” “there’s a bug loose on the rug,” “a bloop and a blast,” “we had ’em all the way.” Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end. But wait, the 2010 Pittsburgh Pirates are over .500 and you know what? If Pittsburgh gets decent starts (12 wins) from three starters and 10 wins from two marginal ones, well as far as I am concerned, they may do a little damage. Last weekend, they retrieved the broom from a cobweb- filled utility closet and swept the Cincinnati “Redlegs.”

Speak Out: Do you think negative behavior by players will tarnish Steelers image?

The recent Santonio Holmes and Ben Roethlisberger incidents have filled the news so we asked Pittsburghers what they thought. Here’s what you said:

“Yes. The Steelers have the most integrity of all professional sports and they’ve always been that way. They’re not putting up with no nonsense. See what they did to Cedrick Wilson, wife beater? Where is he today? When was the last time you heard his name in football? It looks bad for the city.”

Other Voices...Holmes created own path out of Pittsburgh

by Stephen D. Riley
For New Pittsburgh Courier

What message did the Pittsburgh Steelers send by booting one highly troubled player while retaining another? Inquiring minds would like to know. You hold onto a guy coming off back-to-back off-seasons of sexual allegations, but trade a guy who’s coming off back-to-back seasons of drug charges. See the difference? Sex scandals and drugs often go together, but are nowhere near related.

Bryant Gumbel marks 15th year on ‘Real Sports’

by David Bauder

NEW YORK (AP)—Events such as the Masters golf tournament remind Bryant Gumbel why he does “Real Sports” on HBO.

REACHES MILESTONE—In this Oct. 22, 2007 file photo, Bryant Gumble arrives for the Whitney Gala at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York City.

The monthly newsmagazine marks 15 years on the air this week, standing even more alone as a home for strong television journalism than it did in 1995. Gumbel, its host, suggests the deals that media companies make to televise sporting events—for example, CBS and ESPN for the Masters—keep competitors largely out of that business.
