Roethlisberger out as captain, Dixon in at QB

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Ben Roethlisberger is no longer a Pittsburgh Steelers captain. Dennis Dixon is the new Steelers quarterback, at least for the time being.
Roethlisberger, suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season, was not chosen a Steelers captain in a vote by his teammates. He has been selected the previous two seasons. Wide receiver Hines Ward and tight end Heath Miller will be the offensive captains.

In a different vote regarding the quarterbacks, Dixon got the one that counted—by coach Mike Tomlin. Dixon was selected over longtime backup Charlie Batch to start Sunday’s opener against Atlanta, although he has started only one NFL game.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—When Pirates second baseman Neil Walker takes the field at PNC Park, he needs only to glance over his shoulder at the 21-foot Roberto Clemente Wall in right field for inspiration.
Walker, one of the majors’ top rookies, grew up in Pittsburgh hearing countless stories about one of baseball’s greatest outfielders and a man whose influence in his native Puerto Rico extends far beyond the diamond.

City League preview—teams to watch in 2010

The Pittsburgh City League is ready to pick up competition in the 2010 season with some much needed improvement to its home, Cupples Stadium on the South Side. With that should come some much-warranted improvements with certain teams around the league.

“We expect to win every game this season,” Allderdice coach Jerry Haslett said. “Whether those expectations are real or not, that’s what we expect to accomplish. Nothing less.”
Haslett and his Dragons posted a 1-9 record in 2009, but feel they have weapons at the skill positions that will help them make a turnaround this season.

This coming weekend the Steelers begin their 2010 campaign in the city that is quickly earning the name, “The Big Queasy.” There is lots of stomach churning and Tums chewing going on “n’at” over at the headquarters of Steeler Nation.
Just when I thought all was lost in the guts and fortitude department, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not name the more experienced Charlie Batch as his temporary starter but the more raw and athletic “young buck,” Dennis Dixon.

Michael Jordan, Charlotte Bobcats make donation to N.C. schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Michael Jordan and his Bobcats NBA team donated $250,000 to middle-school athletics programs in Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city.
The Charlotte Observer says the NBA hall-of-famer and North Carolina native announced the gift Monday.
Jordan, who made a fortune playing in the NBA and marketing his image as one of the world’s best-known athletes, talked about being a contributor to the Charlotte community when he bought the Bobcats this spring.
