Montour bound for glory, remains perfect 10-0 with 21-13 defeat of West Mifflin

NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus took over the Montour football program in 2005 and instilled discipline and drive to not only the football team but the community as well. Butkus turned around their losing attitude and laid the groundwork for a championship program.

Before Butkus turned the program over to Coach Lou Cerro in 2006, ESPN and Reebok supplied uniforms, Numex donated modern weight-training equipment and Energizer gave a new scoreboard and built a new locker room.

But the final piece of the puzzle was when North Catholic transfer Julian “Batman” Durden, who got his nickname because actor Michael Keaton is a Montour graduate, stepped on the field for the first time in September. The junior running back transferred to Montour after spending the previous two years at North Catholic. He is a division one recruit and has received letters from Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia.

This season, Pitt hopes to take Final (Four) step

PITTSBURGH (AP)—No matter what Pitt accomplishes under coach Jamie Dixon—and, in seven seasons, it has been a lot—there’s always an asterisk attached.

The Panthers, despite winning at least 25 games each of the last five seasons, still haven’t been to the Final Four since the 1940s.

With nearly every player back from last season’s 25-9 team, they’re hoping this is the season they play into April.

Former Schenley, NBA great Maurice Lucas dead at 58

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Former Schenley great and Hill District native Maurice Lucas, the fierce power forward known as “The Enforcer” who helped lead the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 NBA title, has died after a long fight with bladder cancer. He was 58.

Lucas, who in later years was an assistant coach with the Blazers, died Sunday at his home in Portland, the team said.

The 1971 Schenley team with Lucas, Rickey Coleman, and Jeep Kelly is widely regarded as one of the best high school teams to play in Pennsylvania basketball history. That team, representing District 8 and the City League, defeated Norristown for the AAA Championship 77-60.
